One & Two Handed Position

Position Of The Rider’s Hands

Most training or schooling and recreational riding are done with two hands to maintain control.

There are three acceptable two-handed rein positions.

One-Handed Position-Split Reins

When riding with one hand, either hand may be used on the reins.

The reins cannot be switched from hand to hand.

The tails of the split reins fall on the same side as the rein hand.

Only the index finger is permitted between the reins.

One-Handed Position- Romel Rein

When using a romel, no finger is permitted between the reins.

The reins run from the horse’s mouth, passing through the bottom of the hand and out the top.

There must be at least 16 inches between the rein hand and the hand holding the extension.

Western Neck Reining

Traditionally, the reins will be held in your left hand because it left a cowboy’s dominant hand free (usually the right one) to rope cattle, manipulate gates, and do other work.
