Grooming

A FEW GOOD REASONS

  • A daily groom offers an inspection of the entire horse and the opportunity for positive interaction between horse and groom.
  • Opportunity to inspect the horse for any abnormalities such as; sores, cuts, or any signs of sickness.
  • Removes dirt and debris from the coat and stimulates circulation.
  • Keeps the coat in good condition by bringing the horse’s natural oils to the surface of the coat thus improve the horse’s appearance.
  • Grooming should be executed before and after each ride.

GROOMING TIPS

  • The horse should be attached securely to a quick-release mechanism.
  • Grooming equipment should be placed in an area where the horse cannot step on it, but close enough for ease of use.
  • Stiff bristle brushes and curry combs should not be used on the head or legs as they can irritate bony areas that have little flesh covering.
  • Soft bristle brushes can be used on the entire body.

When brushing the head, the horse should be untied but held securely with the lead shank, to provide easy, safe access to this area. All grooming equipment should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water on a regular basis.

I am loving this!! I have been working with horses for a while, and this helps me brush up on some techniques. Already seeing an improvement in all my horses appearances, and their attitudes in general.
