How To Use The Direct Rein
The Direct Rein is applied parallel with the neck. For a direct rein, your hand moves from its neutral position (in front of the pommel, creating a straight line from your elbow to the corner of your horse’s mouth) directly toward your hip.
Effects
When one Direct Rein is used, it tips the nose toward the shoulders.
When both Direct Reins are used it tips the horse’s nose toward the chest.
Direct Reins are used;
- in stopping,
- backing,
- flexion,
- correction
- and transitions
When the direct rein is used, apply pressure, wait for the desired response and immediately release.
