DESCRIPTION
A collected horse is driven forward into the bridle by the rider’s legs which causes him to reach further forward with his haunches.
This makes him arch his back which shortens his frame and his stride, making him “collected”.
He is balanced, ready to work in any direction from the slight aid.
To train a horse to collect,
Walk in a large circle and apply pressure with both legs pushing the horse forward into the bridle.
- Hold reins contact with both hands for 4 to 5 strides.
- When the horse gives to the pressure by tucking his nose slightly, decrease the pressure slowly, and allow him to walk on for 1 to 3 steps on loose reins.
- This exercise must be repeated until the horse becomes more giving.
- Move into a jog and eventually a lope when the horse is understanding what is expected of him.
It is important to remember:
- Always apply legs before reins.
- Never restrict more forward motion with your hands than you can create with your legs.
- Be consistent.
