Stable Management (Basics)

Course Description

Stable Management (Basics) is the entry-level course and the prerequisite that starts the learning tracks within the course catalog curriculum. Students will learn the fundamentals of horse care, physiology, hoof maintenance, and saddlery.

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify Parts of the Horse, Breeds, Colors, and Markings.
  • Understand the principles of Horse Psychology such as; Horse Sense, Herd/Natural instincts, and Vocal/Non-Vocal Communication.
  • Understand basic Horse Care such as; grooming, hoof care, types of feed, and bedding.
  • Recognize the unhealthy horse.
  • Understand the importance of preventative and emergency care of the horse.
  • Explain the pros and cons of trimming and clipping a horse.
  • Describe how to safely; halter a horse, tie a horse with a rope, and how to put a horse on crossties.
  • Understand how to safely lead a horse, from a pasture, and in the stable.
  • Explain safety rules that are generally seen in a barn.
  • Identify parts of the Saddle and bridle for both English & Western Disciplines.
  • Understand Saddling/Bridling Techniques for both English and Western Disciplines.

The Stable Management Basic Course will interest anyone wishing to learn safe horsemanship practices; from beginners with no horse experience to a person who leases, and owns a horse.
