Getting Started

Description

The purpose of the courses is to help the novice Driver develop a good relationship and a degree of comfort with the horse, consider basic safety requirements, learn the major parts of the horse, and develop good grooming habits before and after a driving session.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Safely approach the horse in either a stall or paddock.
  • Correctly fit a halter and lead the horse in a safe manner.
  • Understand and demonstrate basic safety practices in the stable: safe cross-tying, use of quick-release knots, and awareness of potential safety hazards in the environment.
  • Place the horse in cross ties.
  • Correctly groom the horse.
  • Name the major points of the horse.
  • Locate lameness and unsoundness in the horse.
  • Return the horse to stall or paddock.
  • Lunge a horse with side-reins

The Getting Started Course will be of interest to anyone wishing to learn safe horsemanship practices, with the first stages of learning to drive a horse.
